05/02/10 City Take On The Toon Print E-mail

The Bluebirds will be cheered on by 2,600 travelling supporters this evening, as they take on Newcastle at St James' Park. It's Cardiff's first fixture there since the 1983/84 season and many fans will be taking advantage of a weekend stay and a couple of nights on the Toon!

Last time City were at St James' Park, Kevin Keegan was a Newscastle player, in his first spell at the Club and a resurgent Geordies ended up clinching promotion to the top division alongside Chelsea and Sheffield Wednesday. This time around, they have led the Championship for much of the season and have brought six new players into their squad during the January window, to further strengthen their cause. Meanwhile City have serious problems in central midfield with Gavin Rae the latest casualty.

Let's hope Dave Jones' players can continue their fine away form and upset the odds tonight in the North East. A full match report and photos to follow.

23/01/10 F.A.ntastic City Through To 5th Round Print E-mail

Cardiff City 4 Leicester City 2

The Bluebirds are in the hat for the FA Cup 5th Round draw after seeing off Leicester City in a thrilling tie at the Cardiff City Stadium this afternoon. Darcy Blake got a rare start in central midfield alongside Joe Ledley and Mark Kennedy returned at left back.

Only 11,000 fans were there to witness a game that saw City start brightly and take the lead after 17 mins, Michael Chopra putting in a superb cross for Jay Bothroyd to head home. In the final quarter of the first half though, Leicester took control, grabbing an equaliser through Morrison on 34 mins, who headed home from a disputed free kick and then just 5 mins later, Nguessan outmuscled Anthony Gerrard to slot past Marshall to put the visitors ahead at the break.

The Foxes continued to boss midfield after the break, but the introduction of Chris Burke on the hour mark gave City the impeteous to get back in the game and Peter Whittingham brought City level as he fired home direct from a free kick near the right touchline, his high cross-cum-shot deceiving keeper Weale. Leicester though seemed to briefly step up the pace again as they looked to win the game without the need of a replay, however if was the Bluebirds who earned the plaudits after two wonderful injury time goals.

Firstly, Burke drilled home from inside the box after Ledley's shot was initially blocked, then just moments later, Chopra ran at the opposition defence, his shot rebounding into the path of McCormack, who followed up to score his first goal of the season, to cap a storming finish for Cardiff.

It was a brilliant victory for City, especially considering the continuing injury problems and off the field issues still blighting the club. Ben Steele was in attendance, the latest in a line of potential investors. Let's hope we get a resolution to all the uncertainty sooner rather than later, as Dave Jones has built a squad that looks as if it could really push on if he is allowed to bring in a few fresh faces to add some competition.
